Spark Gap

Protection spark gaps form an important part of series compensation schemes in high voltage transmission and distribution networks. Their primary function is to safeguard the series capacitors from transient over voltages. In the event of fault, the line current may momentarily increase and the corresponding voltage across the capacitor banks may exceed the short time over-voltage limit . The spark gap, which is connected in parallel with the bank is set to spark over when the voltage across the bank exceeds the permissible level. Thus the spark gap acts as a bypass for the capacitor during faults.
